Project Management

A good project manager will save money and reduce stress!

If you're thinking about a major project such as an extension or a house renovation, one of the most important decisions you have to make at the start is who is going to manage the project? Will you be doing it yourself or will you be looking for a project manager?

It is one of those jobs that seems easy until you're in the middle of it. Depending on the scope of the job, you will probably need multiple trades such as plasterers, builders, plumbers and, of course, electricians.

As electricians we are, more often than not, the first ones in and the last ones out - we're first on site to make safe any electrics and provide a 'builder's supply' so that the work can start and be done safely.

We come back during first fix to lay any cables and any other infrastructure and we have to work closely with the builders to make sure any electrical supplies are in just the right place for the final fix.

Of all the trades we'll be the last on site to fit the lights and sockets, carry out any final safety checks and sign off the certificates.

As such, we are very well placed to take on the additional responsibilities of the Project Manager.

With over 2 decades of experience, Jeelek boss Keith Coleman has managed a wide variety of projects from small extensions to new builds and he has built great relationships with some of the best tradesmen on the Isle of Wight.

"I have come to know the best in their trade and I use them time and time again. More importantly, I have learned who to avoid and will only select trades that I know will work to the same high standards I do. This is how I make sure the job is finished to a level that I would accept in my own home. Whether it is a kitchen or bathroom refurbishment or a full property restoration, you can be assured we will only use reputable local trades that I personally know and trust and that work to the high quality standards that we expect".

As I am not always on the island, having work carried out whilst I was not there was causing me concern. Keith could not have been more helpful at, not only carrying out his own work, but also managing the full renovation works.

On my behalf, Keith liaised with other trusted contractors, arranged all the logistics of their work and oversaw/ managed the project. He ensured that the contractors arrived on time and carried out the work specified. Keith is extremely trustworthy and I am so grateful for the care and attention he gave this work.

Getting the right trades in is important but it is not the ony thing a project manager does.

A project manager is responsible for managing the timing and flow of the project. Building work rarely runs to schedule and there are always surprises and issues. A good project manager will spot these early and will work to ensure things go as smoothly as possible.

We will make sure that the trades are brought in at the right time. Managing multiple tradespeople can be stressful and extremenly time consuming. having a project manager should make the project much more efficient, and less expensive in the long run.

Many home renovation projects will need a number of professionals: an architect, builder, kitchen fitters, electrician, plumber etc. – and each will need a contract and sign up to the health ad safety policy. A good project manager can take care of this and take pressure off you, making the project far less risky and stressful.
