Turning a questionable install into a clean, flexible lighting upgrade

TL;DR

I found existing GU10 downlights weren’t installed to a good standard
Wiring and terminations needed improving before any upgrade
I installed proper plug-in connectors for safety and ease

What I found when I arrived

Just be warned, the 3rd image shows what appears to some blatant product placing (my van!). I promise, this was NOT done on purpose... ��

Starting Point: Not All Downlights Are Equal

At first glance, the existing GU10 downlights didn’t look too bad—but once I opened them up, it was clear they hadn’t been installed with much care.

Loose fittings, poor terminations, and no proper connection method meant it wasn’t something I’d want left hidden above a ceiling. I see this quite a bit in domestic properties where lighting has been changed over time without following best practice.

Getting the Basics Right First

Before I fit anything new, I always make sure the groundwork is solid.

That meant isolating the circuit, checking the existing cables, and making sure everything was safe and secure. No shortcuts—just doing things properly.

I then installed a Click Flow™ CT101C 20A 3-pole plug-in lighting connector . It’s a simple bit of kit, but it makes a big difference—keeps connections secure, speeds up installation, and makes life easier if anything ever needs changing in the future.

The Upgrade: Modern LED with Built-In Flexibility

Once everything was prepped, in went the Ovia Inception Milli LED downlights —a big upgrade from the old GU10s.

They’re not just a cleaner finish (although they do look much better against the ceiling), they’re also far more practical. Fire-rated and IP65 rated means they’re suitable for a wide range of areas and meet current safety standards.

What I really like about these fittings is the flexibility. You can switch between wattages and choose your light colour—warm white, cool white, or daylight—just with a flick of a switch. No changing lamps, no hassle.

The End Result

The end result is exactly what I aim for on every job—neat, safe, and built to last.

More importantly, what’s behind the ceiling is now just as good as what you can see. Proper connections, compliant fittings, and a setup the client can rely on.

A little upgrade with a big impact

When a local business asks for a hand, I’m always happy to step in—especially when it’s someone as dedicated as Charlie over at Charlie’s Detailing in Ventnor. They’ve just hit their first birthday this November, which is great to see, and the workshop is going from strength to strength.

Recently, they got in touch for a lighting upgrade in their detailing bay at Unit 5 on Ventnor Industrial Estate. The job? Install a new hex lighting system designed specifically for detailing work. It might sound small, but in this line of work, lighting makes all the difference.

Why lighting matters so much in a detailing workshop

Detailing relies on precision. If the light isn’t right, even the most experienced detailer can miss swirl marks, scratches or tiny imperfections that only show up under bright, even illumination.

After more than three decades working across homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight, one thing has always stood out to me: good workmanship never goes out of fashion . Electrical testing isn’t just a box to tick — it’s about keeping people safe and making sure a property is built on solid, reliable foundations.

Now, I’ll be completely honest with you:
Electrical testing is not my favourite part of the job.

Some electricians love it. Some even build their entire business around it — doing nothing but tests all day, every day. And yes, you’ll always find a few who use testing as a way to generate work, marking down anything and everything just to justify follow-up jobs.

That’s never been my style.

For me, testing is a necessary part of taking care of a property — not an opportunity to make life difficult or expensive for the person on the receiving end. I don’t enjoy finding things wrong, but if something is wrong, I want you to know about it so you can stay safe. That’s the whole point.

I’ve always believed in a balanced, common-sense approach . Regulations matter — they’re there for a reason — but they also allow room for judgement. When I test a home or business, I’ll talk you through what I find, explain what needs attention and what can wait, and give you advice you can trust. No scaremongering. No over-the-top recommendations. Just honest guidance.

The first step was to remove these outdated elements and strip back the damp and mouldy wall and ceiling plasterboard, along with the compromised stud work, down to the brickwork and joists. This thorough removal was crucial to address decades of water damage and to prepare the space for a robust refurbishment.

Laying the Foundation: Structural Improvements

Once the room was stripped back, we treated the walls to prevent future damp issues. The existing flooring and joists, which had suffered extensive water damage, were replaced with new, sturdy joists and flooring. This foundational work ensured a solid and secure base for the new shower room. We then installed new stud walls and moisture-proof plasterboard, creating a resilient framework to support the room's new features.

Modern Amenities with a Classic Touch

To bring the shower room into the 21st century while respecting the property's heritage, we concealed all new pipework within the stud walls. This clean installation served the new shower, a wall-hung washbasin, and a wall-hung toilet with a concealed W/C flush panel.

A particularly thoughtful addition was the handy niche within the shower area wall, providing a convenient space for toiletries, complete with an LED lighting strip for both functionality and ambiance. The shower tray was seamlessly integrated into the floor, which was beautifully tiled to create a cohesive and elegant look.

We installed a high-level, large rain effect circular shower head for a luxurious showering experience, complemented by a sleek handheld shower attachment for versatility. This combination ensures that every shower is both indulgent and practical, catering to the needs of modern living.

Pat also fabricated and installed bespoke panelling and skirting around the drawing room's perimeter to the client's exact specifications. Additionally, he refurbished three sets of existing bay doors and shutters, bringing them back to their original splendor.

In keeping with the room's traditional character, we installed low-level 5-amp sockets for stand-up lamps. Interestingly, these plugs, originally described as Tripins in a 1911 book about A. P. Lundberg & Sons' electrical products, have a pin configuration virtually identical to the more modern BS 546 plugs we used. This attention to detail ensured that every aspect of the room respected its historical roots.

Recently, we were approached by a regular customer with a vintage sports and classic car repair workshop on the Isle of Wight. He faced a significant challenge: his workshop needed to power several pieces of 3-phase, 400-volt equipment, but he only had a single-phase, 230-volt electrical supply.

One potential solution, of course, is asking the local electricity board to install a 3-phase supply but that can be astronomically expensive. So, he turned to us for help.

Here's how we tackled this challenge and provided an efficient and cost-effective solution.

Understanding the Challenge

Our customer needed to run various 3-phase, 400-volt vehicle repair equipment in his workshop, including:

A 3-phase grinder
A 3-phase hot wash
A 3-phase wheel balancer
A 3-phase mill for milling engine heads

The workshop's existing electrical supply was single-phase, 230 volts, which was insufficient to power these machines. The customer had two options: either request the local electricity board to install a 400-volt 3-phase supply, which would be expensive, or find an alternative solution.

The Alternative Solution: Rotary Phase Converter

To avoid the high costs associated with upgrading the electrical supply, we recommended and installed a 230V to 400V Transwave rotary phase converter. This device would allow the customer to use his 3-phase equipment without the need for a costly electrical system overhaul.

What is a Rotary Phase Converter?

A rotary phase converter is a piece of equipment that converts single-phase power into three-phase power. It uses a combination of an idler motor and capacitors to generate the additional phases. This solution is ideal for workshops and businesses that need to power 3-phase equipment but only have access to single-phase power.

Installation Process

Keith from Jeelek undertook the project with meticulous planning and execution. Here’s how he completed the installation:

Assessment and Planning: Keith conducted a thorough assessment of the workshop’s electrical system and the specific requirements of each piece of equipment. This helped him determine the appropriate size and capacity of the rotary phase converter needed for the job.

Wiring and Outlet Installation: To distribute the 3-phase power to the various pieces of equipment, Keith installed 3-phase outlets throughout the workshop. Each piece of equipment was connected via galvanised trunking and 20mm galvanised conduit, ensuring a robust and safe installation.
Testing and Commissioning: After completing the installation, he conducted comprehensive testing to ensure that the converter and all connected equipment were operating correctly and safely. This included checking voltage levels, load capacity, and overall system performance.

A new lease of life for a caravan site electrical installation

Out with the old, in with the new!

Jeelek engineers had a busy week! We replaced this out-of-date busbar mains installation which supplies various locations on a local caravan and camping site. We fitted a new 3 phase 200amp MCCB Panel board, complete with a new 3-phase distribution board and new 3-phase 200amp Glasgow switch.

A lot of design and planning between Jeelek and our client went into this project, to allow for the least amount of power down-time for the electricity supply to the site. We had to ensure that certain areas of the site remained live throughout the changeover. This proved to be tricky, but with the right planning in place and an understanding client, everything went to plan.

This installation is now up to the current standard and is now future proofed and capable of handling and future expansion to the site.
